WORDLESS WEDNESDAY: Adopt A Shelter Pet Month; Phoebe's Story

November is Adopt A Shelter Pet month, so I thought I'd share Phoebe's story with you.  I adopted Phoebe 3 years ago from the animal shelter I volunteer at.  She was 5 years old.

Poor Phoebe would not even eat if my husband was in the room!
I was so excited to bring Phoebe home, she was such a little darling!  My husband had not met her until I brought her home.  To my horror, we quickly realized she was terrified of men!  OMD. What was I going to do??

A more confident Phoebe posing for the camera like a little movie star!
Fortunately, my husband is really wonderful.  He worked with me for months on Phoebe's Man Terror.  It was a slow process, but she finally conquered her fear of men!  Now she's super confident and friendly, and loves meeting new people - even those of the male gender!

The consensus among trainers and shelter staff was that she was probably mistreated by a male in the household before she came to the shelter.  Phoebe my little girl, I promise you no one will Ever hurt you again!  You will always be loved and pampered. We love you so much!

I love my Mommy and Daddy, and they love me!!
This Thanksgiving we are thankful that Phoebe joined our family and that both Phoebe and Icy are healthy and happy!

THIS IS A BLOGPAWS WORDLESS WEDNESDAY BLOG HOP!!

My new Mama and Papa love me, too! And, they are also working with me to slowly train me out of some behaviors #baggage. How long was this process for Phoebe? *wags*

Aww That is very inspiring. Kilo hates all strangers, especially men. He is also scared of dogs but acts like a little tough guy. I feel so sad for him as it limits where he can go and what he can do. We are working on this too but it is a very slow process. Phoebe sure is cute! Happy Thanksgiving X Susie and Kilo

So glad you have loving parents to help you through behavior issues. It took about 5 months for Phoebe not to be skittish around my husband and other men/boys. One year and about a thousands peanut butter treats later (LOL!) she was worlds away from her terrified behavior! She improved a little every month. Wishing you all the best. Thanks for stopping by today!

I know it's a lot of work and it can be a painfully slow process. Track Kilo's progress weekly and when you look back you'll be able to see how much he's improved. Slowly but surely, I'll bet you'll be able to bring Kilo to an outdoor café in a few months if you keep working with him! Plse let me know how it goes! Happy Thanksgiving, thanks for stopping by today!

What a great story!

I'm glad your husband was able to be patient and help Phoebe overcome her fear of men.

Fears can be tough -- the foster dog I had earlier this year didn't like strangers and it took him quite a while to learn how to be comfortable with new people.

Thanks, Jenna! It really was so wonderful when she finally started to come around and get over that awful fear. At first we didn't know for sure that she would. Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks Mary! My husband really was so patient, there were times when he felt really bad and couldn't understand that it was her irrational fear & not about him. You have to be so patient with some dogs, but it's worth it. I foster too & can relate to the fear issue your foster had. Thanks for stopping by!

Thats a great story! My mom adopted Maui in 2005 and it took time for my dad and my husband to win her over, but she loved them eventually!
